What can patients expect from a clinical trial?

Clinical trials are essential for bringing new medications to market and are carefully designed scientific studies overseen by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The trials, conducted by pharmaceutical companies known as sponsors, aim to answer specific medical questions about investigational or existing drugs.

FDA collaboration with sponsors ensures the safety and efficacy of medications before release. Trials involve animal and human testing, with patient volunteers playing a crucial role. Trusted medical practices, or investigative sites, recruit participants since sponsors lack direct patient access. Safety measures include close monitoring, lab tests, EKGs, and oversight by institutional review boards (IRBs) to protect patients' rights and welfare.

Trial participation entails a partnership between volunteers and the study team, involving careful symptom tracking and periodic site visits for exams and medication supplies. Reasons for participation vary, including access to detailed medical attention, potential early access to new treatments, altruistic contributions to medical science, and the provision of study-related care at no cost, with compensation for time and travel for most protocols.
