Sinus surgery is a common procedure that is performed to correct a variety of sinus conditions. The surgery involves making small incisions in the sinuses to allow drainage and improve airflow.

When Is Sinus Surgery Necessary?

If you are suffering from nasal polyps, you are probably all too familiar with the symptoms: congestion, difficulty breathing, a feeling of pressure in the face, and chronic sinus infections. While medical therapy can improve the symptoms of nasal polyps, it is not always effective in eliminating them. In some cases, sinus surgery in Boca Raton may be recommended to achieve lasting relief. When our SFENTA ENT surgeons perform endoscopic nasal polyp surgery, their goal is to not only remove the existing polyps but to correct any underlying problems that contribute to polyp growth.

This may involve:

  • Removing the turbinates (bony structures inside the nose that help to regulate airflow)
  • Correcting a deviated septum
  • Treating a condition such as allergies or chronic sinusitis

Sinus Surgery vs. Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

When most people think of sinus surgery, they may envision a scalpel, however, in many cases, modern sinus surgery is far less invasive. Endoscopic sinus surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that uses small instruments and a tiny camera to remove obstructions from the sinuses. In contrast, traditional sinus surgery involves making several incisions in the face to access the sinuses. While both procedures can be effective, endoscopic surgery is often the preferred option due to its reduced risk of complications and quicker recovery time.

When Is Surgery Considered the Best Option?

In general, endoscopic sinus surgery is only considered when more conservative treatments have failed. However, there are some circumstances in which traditional sinus surgery may be the best option. For instance, if the sinuses are infected or severely damaged, endoscopic surgery may not be possible. In these cases, traditional sinus surgery may be necessary to remove all the damaged tissue and restore normal function.

What Is the Recovery From Sinus Surgery?

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis so you can return home the same day. For roughly two weeks you will be asked to use a saline rinse. This is so that your sinuses heal properly without complication. Most patients will not require any further surgeries, however, under certain circumstances, further procedures could be necessary.
